Mexico is the leading Latin American country in terms of the number of visitors at Alimentaria

Leading Mexican firms attend each edition of Alimentaria, the sector’s benchmark exhibition in Spain

Alimentaria 2020, which will be held from 20 to 23 April next year at the Fira de Barcelona, hopes to confirm the attendance of Mexican professionals at the last edition, in 2018. The North American country occupied first place in the ranking of Latin American attendees, which also made it the third non-European country – behind the United States and China.

Mexico is a strategic market for the Spanish food industry, thanks to the great impulse experienced by the commercial exchange of goods and services between both countries in recent years. In the food and beverage sector, the strategic alliance signed in 2016 between Mexico’s ANTAD (National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores) and Alimentaria Exhibitions will attract major Mexican distribution chains such as Chedraui, HEB, La Comer, Soriana and Comercial Mexicana to the International Food, Beverage and Food Service Exhibition.

As a result, Mexico occupied third place in the ranking of non-European visitors at Alimentaria 2018, and tenth place in the overall classification – behind only Italy, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Belgium.

Among these visitors, almost thirty purchasing companies attended the show as guests, as part of the Hosted Buyers programme promoted by the exhibition. Thus, firms from the food sector in Mexico as Aldeu, Caribericos, Cava Del Angel, Cesarfer, Comercial City Fresko, Comercial Hispana, Fine Taste Club Mexico, Grupo Herdez or Hanseatik, and large distribution chains such as La Europea, Sams Club, Alsea, Casa Ley, HEB, El Palacio de Hierro, La Comer, Liverpool, Soriana, among others, were part of this mission of Mexican buyers who visited the event in 2018.

In 2018, a dozen Mexican companies participated as exhibitors at Alimentaria, where they occupied nearly 100 m2, including the official Mexican pavilion, organized by the public agency ProMéxico, whose objective is to promote internationalization. Among these exhibitor companies are Harinas Mazareal, Sabores Intensos, Cafiver, Inulina and Miel de Agave, Grupo de Hongo Zeta Endotzi and Aceitera Mevi México.

The most popular Spanish product is olive oil

Mexico is the thirteenth destination country for Spanish food exports, according to the Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB). During 2018, 1.2% of Spanish sales in this sector abroad – which represented a value of 353 million Euros – were destined for the North American country. The Spanish product most demanded by Mexicans is olive oil, whose sales reached a value of 59 million euros.

On the other hand, according to data from ICEX Exports and Investments, Spain imported Mexican products to the value of 254 million euro in 2018, a figure that represents 17% growth on the previous year’s figure. The most important Mexican food product imported by Spain is frozen fish (27 million euros).
As J. Antonio Valls, managing director of Alimentaria Exhibitions, points out, “the visibility which Alimentaria has on the international stage means that every year Mexican firms use the show as a showcase to display and market their products in Spain and its areas of influence, especially the rest of Europe. Relations between the food and beverage industries of Mexico and Spain, cultural neighbours and trading partners, are fundamental for both countries”.

The excellent commercial relationship between the two countries is reflected in the trade show’s organisation of Expo ANTAD & Alimentaria México, the annual exhibition organised by Alimentaria Exhibitions, a Fira de Barcelona company, and ANTAD, the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores. The show, which held its last edition in Expo Guadalajara (Mexico) last March, brought together a total of 24 countries, most of which were Asian (over 51%) and European (around 35%), and to a lesser extent Latin American.

Alimentaria returns with renewed content

Alimentaria will be held from 20 to 23 April 2020 at the Fira de Barcelona, Gran Vía venue. The show is preparing a unique edition with renewed content, aimed primarily at strengthening its business character and projecting gastronomy as its differential value, under the sign of innovation that characterises the event. In 2020, Alimentaria aims to renew the internationalisation levels achieved at the last edition, which was attended by nearly 4,500 exhibitor companies, 1,000 of them from 70 countries, and 150,000 professionals, 45,000 of them from 156 countries.

The event comprises the meat (Intercarn), dairy (Interlact), canning (Expoconser), confectionery and snacks (Snacks, Biscuits & Confectionary), Mediterranean diet, fresh produce, olive oil and vegetables (Mediterranean Foods) and Food Service (Restaurama) shows. Along with them, Grocery Foods will bring together the main consumer goods companies. For its part, International Pavilions – which, five months before the start of Alimentaria 2020, has already exceeded 80% of its sales, an unprecedented figure compared to that achieved in the months prior to the previous editions of the event – will bring together all the foreign offer, while Lands of Spain will do the same with the domestic production of the various Spanish autonomous communities.

As a new feature, Alimentaria 2020 will include the Alimentaria Trends show, where the latest production and consumption trends will be presented, such as delicatessen foods (Fine Foods), organically produced foods (Organic Foods), allergen-free foods (Free From), Halal foods (Halal Foods) and functional foods (Functional Foods).

For the second edition in a row, Alimentaria will once again be held with Hostelco – the International Restaurant, Hotel and Community Equipment Show -, joining forces to provide distribution and the Horeca channel with the most complete and comprehensive range of food, gastronomy and hospitality equipment. Both shows will jointly organise activities with great added value, such as The Experience, a space in which workshops, gastronomic classrooms and showcookings by prestigious chefs will take place.
