Alimentaria, the international benchmark event for the food and beverage sector, will hold its next edition from 20 to 23 April 2020 at the Fira de Barcelona, in which Portugal plays a leading role.

The session, held in the auditorium of the Palacete Viscondes de Balsemão and attended by 20 leading Portuguese companies in the food industry, explored the business opportunities of this sector in the Spanish market, both in the retail channel and in the horeca. In addition, the possibilities that Spanish innovation in the agri-food sector offers to Portuguese companies were presented.

The event was attended by Céline Perez, Project Director of Alimentaria Exhibitions; Isabel Oliveira, Executive Coordinator of the PortugalFoods Market Division; João Ferreira, from the PortugalFoods Knowledge Division; and Carlos Lima, from InovCluster’s internationalisation unit. Boosting bilateral trade

For her part, during the event, Céline Pérez highlighted that “Spain and Portugal, as priority commercial partners, are fully involved in promoting business between companies in the food and beverage industry in both countries. At Alimentaria we work to promote these commercial exchanges, supported by the key position that Portugal occupies in the show“.

The session ‘Get in Touch with Spain’ is part of the programme of activities prior to the celebration of Alimentaria 2020, where Portugal is expected to have an important representation. Thus, in the 2018 edition, Portugal was the third country in terms of international visitors – only behind France and Italy – and the third in terms of exhibition space occupied, with nearly 1,100 m2, after Italy and China. Along these lines, Portugal Foods, the entity responsible for the internationalisation of the country’s agri-food sector, and InovCluster, an association that brings together agri-industrial companies from the central region of Portugal, have already confirmed their participation in Alimentaria 2020.

Priority business partners

Portugal is the third largest recipient of Spanish food products, after France and Italy, with an export value of € 3,413 M in 2018, according to the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB). By volume, the most exported categories were processed and preserved meat and olive oil.

For its part, according to the Federation of Portuguese Agro-food Industries (FIPA), Spain repeated in 2018 as the first destination for the export of Portuguese food and beverages, with € 1,254 M, representing 25% of total sales of the sector abroad. Olive oil, milk and dairy products were the main products sold to Spain.

Céline Pérez also added that “the joint work of Alimentaria, Portugal Foods and InovCluster aims to promote good commercial relations between the food industries of both countries, so that next April’s meeting in Barcelona will result in many commercial agreements between Spain and Portugal“.

The event is preparing a unique edition with renewed content, aimed primarily at boosting its business character and projecting gastronomy as its differential value, under the sign of innovation that characterises the event. In 2020, Alimentaria aims to revalidate the levels of internationalisation reached during the last edition, which was attended by nearly 4,500 exhibiting companies, 1,000 of them from 70 countries, and 150,000 professionals, 45,000 from 156 countries.
